Building and maintaining relationships is a superpower that lets you level up in all aspects of life. An extensive network makes things easier for you, your business and the people you care about. Here’s an example:

Our youngest’s AC went out at her house on one of the hottest days of summer. I gave her the name and cell number for the owner of a local HVAC company and he was on-site that afternoon. Why? Because of the relationship and the way I’ve nurtured it over the years. I help him with his business when I can, usually for free. It’s a small investment in the relationship that pays off big when I need something.

Another example: I recently picked up a new change management consulting project, in large part because of 20+ year relationships maintained with former coworkers. It helps that this type of work is a strength for me, but it wouldn’t happen without the relationships, nurtured with regular check-ins, and helping with small needs when asked.

I think good relationships are built over time, supported by trust, respect and a fair give-and-take. They thrive when nurtured with a kind gesture, a “thinking of you” card or email, or a call when you find yourself thinking of someone unexpectedly. Bad relationships are all take and no give. The kind where calls go directly to voicemail and every interaction feels like a drain, rather than a fountain.

How are you doing with your relationships? Are you investing, or withdrawing?
