This is a text I received from my daughter’s teacher letting me know that my seven-year-old was handing out invitations to our dog’s birthday party.

Text about Muffins birthday party

I even received texts from parents with photos of the handwritten invitation, telling me their children are insistent on how big of a deal Muffin’s party is.

I asked Genevieve about it when she got home from school. She just nodded with a big smile and said, “It’s legit.”

For the record, there was no risk assessment, calendar review, or internal debate about whether this was “a good idea.”

Clearly there was a lack of planning, but…there was also an impressive lack of self-doubt.

Genevieve had an idea she cared about, assumed it was worth sharing, and moved forward without talking herself out of it first. Imagine how much we’d all accomplish if we thought that way.

The logistics of an unexpected party can be solved. The courage to begin is harder to teach – to children, coworkers or employees.

I hope we can all have more of that seven-year-old confidence and bias toward action for our 2026 goals. We’re nearly 1/12th through 2026 already, and there’s a lot to be said for simply having the courage to begin, or take the next step with our own initiative.

Perfection is the enemy of progress.

…wish me and Muffin luck on the 24th.
